There is an entry for [Gate] Helmsley [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/SE6955/gate-helmsley/] [accessed 10 December 2019] but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. The entry for this parish in the Victoria County History (York North Riding, vol. 2, 1923) notes: "No early record of the church of Gate Helmsley seems to survive. [...] The church has been so thoroughly restored as to leave little trace of its architectural history. The existing nave, however, appears to date from the 13th century and the chancel was probably of the same date, though now entirely rebuilt. [...] The font is a plain 13th-century octagonal bowl moulded on its lower edge and having a concave stem of the same form and a moulded base". The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: SE6907155217] notes: "Church. Early C13 arcade, C15 west tower, substantially restored 1885-6", but mentions no font in it. The font appears to be monolithic except for a detached lower base, also octagonal. Modern font cover.
