Scene Description: Source caption: "St James, Church Street, Sutton on Hull, Yorkshire. It is believed that the font, circa 1200, was used in the earlier chapel of Sutton on Hull. The nailhead ornamentation around the rim characterises the Early English period. The font was originally tub-shaped but, later, was cut back to its present shape. It stands between the pillars at the west end of the church."

There are three multiple entries for Sutton [-on-Hull] [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/TA1132/sutton-on-hull/] [accessed 18 October 2019], none of which reports cleric or church in it. The entry for this church in the Victoria County History (York East Riding, vol. 1, 1969) notes: "A chapel at Sutton is first mentioned c. 1160 [...] although it did not become formally independent of the mother church at Wawne it was nevertheless regarded as a rectory in 1291 [...] it would seem that the church was rebuilt after the foundation of the college in 1347, and thus needed to be reconsecrated [...] the church was consecrated in 1349 [...] There is a late-12th-century tub font, which has a band of nail-head ornament round the top and stands on a modern base. After being by the south door, [...] and also under the tower, [...] it was placed in the north aisle in 1922 when a baptistry was formed there." The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: TA1181032950] notes; "Parish church. Nave and south aisle c1347, west tower and aisle west bays c1400; roofs, chancel arch, east window and arcades renewed, and vestry added 1866 during restoration by RG Smith, Borough Engineer. Organ chamber 1883 by Smith & Brodrick of Hull, reusing 2 chancel windows. Tower restored, parapet and pinnacles renewed 1886. [...] Fittings include C13 tub font with nailhead band on renewed octagonal stem."
