Scene Description: ruins of the baptismal font from a free-standing 7th-century baptistery existed in what is now the east end of the cathedral; the baptistery itself was demolished in the 9th century -- one of the 'radial' protrusions from the font, seen here in the bottom right corner appears hollow; it might have been one of the drainage or intake conduits for the water

Remains of the baptismal font of the free-standing 7th-century baptistery in what is now the east end of the cathedral; the baptistery itself was demolished in the 9th century. Excavations in the 19th and 20th centuries discovered a second pool [Becken] underneath this one, but it could not be ascertained that it was intended for baptismal purposes. Der älteste Taufort von Köln ist damit wieder zugänglich" in the 3 April 2016 edition of DOMRADIO.DE [https://www.domradio.de/artikel/neue-raeumlichkeiten-am-baptisterium-der-ostseite-des-koelner-doms-eingeweiht] [accessed 24 October 2022] informs on and illustrates the relocation of this font to a new accessible site within the cathedral complex
