No individual entry for Handale found in the Domesday survey. The entry for this Cistercian priory in the Victoria County History (York, vol. 3, 1974) notes: "This small nunnery, under the invocation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, was founded in 1133 (fn. 1) by William Percy of Dunsley, in the parish of Loftus-in-Cleveland. [...] The priory church is mentioned in a 1390 Boniface IX indulgence [ibid., fn7] " to those who on the feast of the dedication visited and gave alms for the conservation of the church and priory of Handale". The entry for the Handale Abbey Farmhouse in Historic England [Listing NGR: NZ7253915681] notes: "Farmhouse,mid C18. Remains of Cistercian Priory founded 1133 possibly incorporated in wing and outhouse adjoining right."
