The entry for this Cistercian abbey in the Victoria County History (York, vol. 3, 1974) narrates the events that led to the destruction of the first ca. 1132 abbey church here: "the church was set on fire, and the abbey sacked", and its eventual reconstruction: "The church was finished in 1245 by Abbot John de Cantia, [...] who built and finished the nine altars, the cloister, infirmary, pavement, and guest-house for poor and rich [...] The surrender of the abbey was made on 26 November 1539". [cf. BSI entry for Aldfield, NYrks, for a large stoup said to be originally from this Abbey and later moved to Aldfield parish church]
