No individual entry found for Friern Barnet in the Domesday survey. The entry for this parish in the Victoria County History (Middlesex, vol. 6, 1980) notes: "A church mentioned in 1187 (fn. 4) was probably the church of St. James, which was originally built in the later 12th century. The bishop of London gave it to the knights of St. John [...] The original structure consisted of a diminutive Norman nave and chancel, a wooden tower at the west end, and a south porch [...] the church was enlarged by W. G. and E. Habershon in 1853 [...] Although materials may have been re-used, only the extensively restored Norman south doorway of the original structure was preserved. [...]The new church was built in the Early English style"; all other churches in this town are modern, as are their fonts. The present font in this church is modern.
