Font Notes:
There is an entry for Hillingdon [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/TQ0682/hillingdon/] [accessed 10 June 2019] but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. The entry for this parish in the Victoria County History (Middlesex, vol. 4, 1971) notes: "Shortly after 1100 Hillingdon church was granted by Brian Fitz Count, lord of Colham manor, to the Worcestershire abbey of Evesham [...] The oldest part of the building is the re-set chancel arch which has 'stiff-leaf' foliage capitals of the 13th century. The nave arcades, each of three bays, date from the mid 14th century but little medieval work survives in the aisles except for their 15th-century roofs"; no font is mentioned in the VCH entry for this church. The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: TQ0691482916] notes: "Parish Church. C13 chancel arch, (only remaining part of earlier chancel) nave and aisles C14, West tower rebuilt in 1629, the building refurbished and transepts and chancel added by Sir G G Scott 1847-8, North east vestry of 1964 by H Norman Haines"; no font mentioned here either. Bob Speel writes in his web site [http://www.speel.me.uk/chlondon/hillingdonch.htm] [accessed 10 June 2019]: "The font is interesting: a great circular bowl, with an octagonal surround, with alternate panels of angels and birds or winged beasts. More angels under the curve of the bowl. Below, on the base, a naked figure in the centre of each of the four sides, and a seated lion at each corner with curly locks to the mane. The figures are medieval in style, with large heads and lively carving, and the lions are also early in look. Whatever the original date, I would guess the upper part had a good makeover in the later 19th Century, and the lower part with figures and beasts was just tidied up a little." The present font appears to be a modern copy of an East Anglian font [which? / generic?]
