Scene Description: the font is clearly a composite object, the basin obviously modern; the missing basin was reported in the churchyard ca. 1962

Font Notes:
There is an entry for this Cowley [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/TQ0582/cowley/] [accessed 6 June 2019] but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. The entry for this parish in the Victoria County History (Middlesex, vol. 3, 1962) notes: "Cowley church was in existence by the 12th century, [...] having presumably been founded by Westminster Abbey or one of its tenants to minister to the needs of the manor. [...] The church of ST. LAURENCE, Cowley, is the smallest medieval parish church in the county. [...] The nave dates from the 12th century. [...] The present font dates from this time [i.e., the 19thC]: in 1849 a 'minute cavity' in the sill of one of the north windows was being used as a font. The bowl of what appears to be a medieval font lies in the churchyard below the east window." The font inside the church now [October 2001] is clearly a composite, basin and base mismatched; the basin is modern, and octagon with quatrefoils inscribed in every panel; the moulded pedestal base and the plinth, both octagonal appear weathered and older than the basin; the design of the pedestal base is one that could belong between the 15th(?) and the 19th(?) centuries; if the disused basin in the churchyard matches this base perhaps it can throw some light on the age of the font -- this is not the font of the original 12th-century church here].
