An article in the 11 January 2017 edition of the Schaumburger Nachrichten [www.sn-online.de/Schaumburg/Rodenberg/Huelsede/Ein-Taufstein-geht-auf-Reisen] [accessed 23 February 2019] informs that the old baptismal font from the Pfarrkirche St. Ägidien in Hülsede went on a 'tour' as an exhibit in Wittenberg. The font was returned to its place in the church on 28 October 2017, as reported in the Schaumberger Wochenblatt [www.schaumburger-wochenblatt.de/artikel/2017-10-28-monstrum-beendet-lange-reise] [accessed 23 February 2019]. The old font had been restored in 1999, but remains unused, as baptisms are officiated in another font that was donated to the church in 1671. The font consists of a roughly hemispherical basin decorated with a band of pointed arch-heads with trefoiled intrados, with trefoils in the spandrels, raised on a cylindrical pedestal base with a moulding atop.round. No cover present. A communication from Pol Herman to BSI (e-mail of 27 June 2022) includes an article by Andrea Hesse on the website of the Evangelisch-Lutherische Landeskirche Hannover on 30th of January 2017, in English translation: "A FONT ON TRAVEL. The exhibition "baptismal experience space" is being created in Wittenberg. It focusses around the loaned font from Hülsede. The font weighs around 500 kilograms, has a diameter of almost one meter and is still treated with great care: the ancient baptismal font from the St. Aegidien church in Hülsede (township of Rodenberg) started an eight-month journey to Wittenberg last week . There it will play an important role in the "baptismal experience space" with which the Hanoverian state church will be presenting itself during the "Reformation World Exhibition" in downtown Wittenberg. "Our baptismal font is made of Obernkirchen sandstone and dates from the 13th, 14th or 15th century," says Eckhardt Arndt, church leader in St. Aigidien's church. The font has a capacity of more than 100 liters and is decorated with beautiful Gothic ornaments, the base is made of solid stone. "For centuries," says Arnd, "this baptismal font has had its place under the gallery at the former main entrance to our church" - even after it has been removed, a dark spot on the stone floor shows the location. With great care, employees of a stonemason's workshop, in which the baptismal font had been restored in 1999, separated the baptismal font from the base. Muscle strength was initially required: the craftsmen carefully tilted the stone and its base, then pushed round timber under it and rolled it out from under the low gallery, just like in the Middle Ages. Thanks to the logs, one step could also be overcome and the baptismal font and base could then be lifted onto pallets with the help of a pulley block in a steel frame. Safely lashed, master stonemason Meier then drove the valuable freight to his company premises, where it was securely packed for transport to Wittenberg. "During our preliminary considerations for the exhibition, I remembered the old baptismal font of Hülsede," says Oberkirchenratin Dr. Heike Köhler, responsible for the Wittenberg project in the regional church office in Hanover. A few years ago she worked as a pastor in the Kathrinhagen-Rolfshagen parish, but she had never baptized at the old baptismal font. She found the baptismal font, with its impressive size and archaic appearance, to be particularly suitable for the experience of baptism, so she contacted Pastor Dieter Meimbresse and the church council - and received positive feedback. The congregation said goodbye to their "fat man" with a service, as Eckhardt Arndt lovingly says, and then the font was eagerly awaited in Wittenberg. In the rented shop on the Stadtgraben, which is to become the “baptismal experience space”, the starting signal for the interior design is given with the arrival of the baptismal font: "The planning is complete, but only when the basin of the baptismal font is set up, do we build everything else around it". , reports Heike Koehler. Incidentally, baptisms continue to take place in Hülsede : baptisms have been taking place at a smaller baptismal font in the sanctuary for a number of years. Clemens-Christian Stummeyer, Chairman of the Church Council, still remembers other times: "My two daughters were baptized at the old baptismal font that we have now sent on its journey."
