Font Notes:
There is an entry for Scamblesby [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [folio 350v Great Domesday Book] [https://opendomesday.org/place/TF2778/scamblesby/] [accessed 7 January 2019] but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: TF2762978474] notes: "Parish church. 1893, by R. H. Fowler, re-using some late C12 fragments [...] the easternmost pier in the south arcade is re-used late C12 fabric from the demolished church of Cawkwell, with octagonal, chevroned pier with 4 attached columns. ...] Large C13 drum font with octagonal pedestal with 4 attached shafts." The entry for this church in Explore Churches [www.explorechurches.org/church/st-martin-scamblesby] [accessed 5 January 2018] notes: "The 13th century font is also most unusual. It has a massive and unusual bowl, round at the top with an octagonal pedestal." The original basin may have been re-cut at some point; the columnar base and the plinth are later additions, as is the modern wood cover.
