Church Notes: church here of 1675 said to have been built with materials from the Kloster Thedinga [aka Kloster Seyna], a late-12thC Benedictine monastery in Nüttermoor; Leer Kirche was modified and expanded 18th, 19thC
There are two fonts now in this church, but neither of them is the one from the original 1675 church here [presumed lost?]. At the feet [west] of the nave is a font consisting of a shallow octagonal basin with foliated underbowl, with some palmettes in it; the next segment down, also octagonal, has floral and floriated crosses on the vertical sides; the stem of the base is decorated with rectangular colour panels; the lower bas is octagonal as well, with graded mouldings; the whole is made of painted and gilded plaster, said to be a replica, but we have no information what it was copied after. The present font in use stands at the east end of the nave, near the altar; it is monolithic, a single block of Bentheim sandstone made in 2016 by Gerd Christmann; the basin is quatrefoiled inside and out, the base a square pedestal with plain panels. There is no cover present on either of the two fonts. [cf. Index entry for Leer No. 2 for the Romanesque font of the ca. 1200 church here].
