There is an entry for this Sowerby [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SE0423/sowerby/] [accessed 23 November 2018]; it reports three priests and two churches in it. [NB: there are three different Sowerbys entered for the Yorkshires in the Domesday survey: one near Thirsk, another near Halifax, and another near Whitby]. The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: SE0428823202] notes: "Church. 1763-66 by John Wilson (Linstrum p.80), vestry and interior restoration c.1880. [...] Octagonal medieval font [...] This fine classical church replaced an earlier one on the site." Malcolm Bull's Companion to Calderdale [www.calderdalecompanion.co.uk/c109_s.html#s286] [accessed 23 November 2018] notes that a chapel of ease was established here in 1592, but it was dismantled when the new St Peter's was built. The corresponding entry in Forebears [http://forebears.co.uk/england/yorkshire/sowerby#sid18097] [accessed 23 November 2018], however, notes: "the font was placed by Frederick Rawson esq. as a memorial of his daughter". Harman & Pevsner (2017) report two fonts in this church: "Good Gothic Caen stone [font], 1862, and a curious medieval(?) [font] with pierced pedestal."
