view of basin - detail

Scene Description: Notice the large new-stone repair on the right -- the hole on the left may have been caused by a flaw in the chemical composition of the stone.

INFORMATION

Font ID: 21865POG
Object Type: Baptismal Font1
Font Century and Period/Style: 14th - 15th century, Medieval
Church / Chapel Name: Evangelisch-lutherische Pogumer Kirche
Font Location in Church: Inside the church, in the nave, N side, E end
Church Notes: present church built 1776 on the foundations of medieval (?) church
Church Address: Kirchring 4, Pogum, 26844 Jemgum, Germany
Site Location: Ostfriesland., Niedersachsen, Germany, Europe
Directions to Site: Located 1-2 km W of Ditzum, across the Emse from Emden, NW of Leer, on the N tip of the Rheiderland, near the border with the Nederlands
Ecclesiastic Region: Bistum Münster
Additional Comments: re-used font (originally from the late-medieval (?) church, installed in the late-18thC building on the same site)
Font Notes:
Monolithic baptismal font of dodecagonal shape; the basin has plain vertical sides and a thin moulding at the bottom, a moulding that separates the basin from the tapering and slightly concave hexagonal (?) base. There is obvious damage to the upper rim and sides that has been repaired with new stone inserts; the damage was probably caused by the metal staples of an old cover, but there is no cover on the font now; there is a metal baptismal dish in place.
