No individual entry found for Marsden in the Domesday survey. A document from the Marsden Local History Group [https://web.archive.org/web/20070219055422/http://www.marsdenhistory.co.uk/church and chapel.html] [accessed 8 September 2018] notes: "In the time of Henry VI (15th Century), Marsden was in the parishes of Huddersfield and Almondbury. Because of the distances involved for the inhabitants of the village to attend worship, a Chapel-of-Ease was built. The Chapel held 311 people and the priest was paid for by the villagers. It had fallen into decay by 1480, the people being unable to afford its upkeep, so Edward IV gave an endowment of 4 Marks, which enabled the church in Marsden to continue [...] A new chapel was built on the same site in 1758 [...] The site of these chapels was over the road from the present church, and some of the foundations and gravestones can still be seen [...] Money was collected for 40 years for the building of a new church, and it was built in 1895. The old chapel was sold for £60, and pulled down. [...] The Present Church of St Bartholomews [...] The nave and aisle were finished in 1895, the chancel and lady chapel in 1899, and the church bell was donated in 1895 by Joseph Crowther, the local millowner. The tower was built in 1911".
