view of church exterior in context

Scene Description: Source caption: "New Riaño: the new village built after the flooding of Riaño, in the province of León, Spain. The old village is located under the bridge (according to a local lady, the old chemist’s is directly below the seventh pillar of the bridge, probably counting from the left bank). It was flooded in order to build a dam. The mountain on the left is Peak Gilbo." [NB: the church seen here in the centre of the image, by the right end of the bridge, is Santa Agueda]

Church Notes: original church 13thC; Gothic paintings inside
Monolithic baptismal font; the bucket-shaped basin appears to have a single symbol on it, a potent patriarchal cross with the crossing arms of the same length; two metal staples remain from an earlier cover system, and an insert-stone repair may indicate the font had another piece of hardware in that spot. The upper rim of the font bears a label that dates it to the 8th-9th century , but the font is probably of the date of the church itself, 13th-14th century.
