Noted in the Lüneburger Heide site [https://www.lueneburger-heide.de/service/sehenswuerdigkeit/225/st-johannis-kirche-salzhausen.html] [accessed 21 April 2018] as a baptismal font made of bronze in 1403; it consists of a bucket-shaped basin with four bands of decoration framed by thin mouldings all around, raised on four standing human figures whose feet are attached to a ring base; just below the upper rim are three parallel mouldings, a band of incised vine, and three parallel mouldings below; there is an anchoring point for the original font cover across this band, a handle-shaped torsade; the band below is wider and has fleur-de-lys and six-petal florettes in it, as well as incised floral crosses; three pairs of parallel mouldings frame the next two bands; the upper band has incised floral motifs and varied symbols; the lower band has a lovely-rendered acanthus vinethat runs around except where the heads of the base figures are; the four outwards-facing figures of the base look young, with pleated hair, and are dressed in simple tunics, their hands clasped at front; the ring making up lower base is plain. The font cover apears to be of metal, modern, and covers a small basin that has been fitted onto the top of the old basin.
