Scene Description: Source caption: "East Lydford: Church of St. Mary. This is a disused Church with lots of character. The spire can be seen from distance and is an immediate attraction. There are signs of subsidence in the tower but overall it is disappointing to see an attractive Church such as this no longer in use."

There is an entry for [East] Lydford [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/ST5731/east-lydford/] [accessed 7 February 2018], but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. The entry for this parish in The National Gazetteer of 1868 mentions a church dedicated to St. Peter, but it appears to refer to the parish church at Lydford-on-Fosse. The entry for this church in British Listed Buildings [Listing NGR: ST5723131252] reports: Plain C13 octagonal font reused from an earlier church." The entry for this parish in the Victoria County History (Somerset, vol. 3, 1974) notes: "The church of East Lydford is first mentioned in 1230, although reference was made at that date to the then parson's predecessors [...] The medieval church of St. Peter lay isolated at the northern end of the village on the banks of the Brue. The site is marked by the remains of the churchyard wall, a heap of rubble around the remains of the porch, and a few scattered gravestones [...] In 1864 the parishioners decided to rebuild the church on a new site, the old building being dilapidated, damp, and inconvenient [...] The present church of the BLESSED VIRGIN MARY was erected nearer the centre of the village [...] It was designed by Benjamin Ferrey and consecrated in 1866 [...] The Jacobean oak pulpit and a plain font, possibly 13th century, were taken from the old church." An undated web page [www.dawsonheritage.co.uk/somerset_churches/church.asp?ChooseChurch=East Lydford St Mary] [accessed 7 February 2018] notes that the 'new' church of East Lydford St Mary was "Consecrated in 1866 but now disused, delapidated and desolate"; the site includes exterior and interior views of this church, one of them showing a font in it, but the font in the photograph that shows the west view of the nave is modern.
