view of font and cover

Scene Description: notice the larger damage at the corner; the thin round drilled hole for a metal staple is visible here; it was probably the expansion of the metal that split the stone, a common occurrence in stone fonts where the expansion rates of metal and stone differ; notice also the plain cover -- Source caption: "The font is from the original church"

Font Notes:
There are three entries for Markby [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/TF4878/markby/] [accessed 31 January 2018], none of which mentions cleric or church in it. The Victoria County History {Lincolnshire, vol. 2, 1906) notes: "There is little doubt that the priory of St. Peter at Markby was founded during the reign of Henry II, though there is no mention of it earlier than 1204". The Alford Group of Parishes site [http://alfordgroupofchurches.org.uk/markby.asp] [accessed 31 January 2018] mentions "the ancient font from the old parish church" in the present church. The present font consists of an octagonal basin with plain verticals sides and a graded chamfered underbowl, raised on a short and plain stem and a moulded lower base, both octagonal as well. The font has some damage to the upper rim sides. There appear to be two round wooden covers used on this font [cf. ImagesArea]: one is totally flat, plain and modern; the other is also round and plain but with with a constructional handle; probably made of oak; date unknown. The entry for this church in the British Listed Buildings [Listing NGR: TF4872478816] reports a "C14 plain octagonal font with moulded base."
