Scene Description: 12thC tympanum from the west portal of the medieval parish church at Meistratzheim, now in the cemetery chapel --listed in Palissy [ref.: IM67001572]: "Tympan provenant vraisemblablement du portail ouest de l'église primitive du 12e siècle ; transféré dans l'église en 1721, il fut encastré dans le mur et il occupe sa place actuelle depuis 1939 [...] élément d'architecture ; figure biblique (Christ bénissant) ; figures (saint Benoît : ? : évêque, sainte Scolastique : ?, homme : en donateur, femme : en donateur) [...] Les deux personnages agenouillés pourraient être Hubo et Walpurga, donateurs à l'origine d'une fondation religieuse à Meistratzheim."

Church Notes: used now as the cemetery chapel, it incorporates the remains of the original medieval [11thC?] parish church here -- listed in Mérimée [ref.: IA00023868]: "De l'église romane primitive (dont la date de construction est inconnue mais remonte sans doute au 11e siècle) , subsistent encore un clocher, un choeur carré et une dalle de tympan sculptée de la 2e moitié 12e siècle ; l'église est agrandie d'une nef entre 1720 et 1722 et le clocher est surbâti en 1724 par Mathias Solhart et Jean Riederer (inscription) ; sacristie détruite vers 1960 ; l'édifice qui sert actuellement de chapelle de cimetière depuis la construction de la nouvelle église conserve encore un beau tabernacle du 18e siècle ; et 4 dalles funéraires de la fin du 18e siècle et du début du 19e".
