Scene Description: Source caption: "Karkun kirkon vanha kastemalja on Suomen kastemaljojen aatelia. Se kuuluu siihen muutaman maljan ryhmään, joka on arvioitu tehdyn 1200-luvun hengessä. Valmistusmaa Suomi. Maljaosa on useista mennyt rikki tai kadonnut kokonaan. Jalka on kestänyt paremmin. Karkun kirkon kastemalja on täysin ehjä ja koristelematon. Jalka on hieman korkeampi kuin muissa vastaavissa. Esimerkiksi Hollolan ja Turun Maarian kirkkojen maljat ovat keskenään lähes identtiset. Niissä on sama kolmiapilamainen koristelu. Muuten ne ovat hyvin samanlaisia kuin Karkun malja. ähän Karkun ihmeeseen on syytä suhtautua suurella kunnioituksella. Siinä on kastettu lapsia ja aikuisia lähes koko kristillisen kirkollisesti järjestetyn toiminnan ajan. 1890-luvun vihkonen kertoo:”Puuarkun vieressä taasen on kivijalustalla seisova kivimalja, jonka diameteri on noin kyynärän pituinen. Siinä sitä piti munkkien, sen mukaan kuin kansantaru tietää kertoa, kastaneen pieniä lapsukaisia, jonka mukaan maljaa sanotaankin ”lasten maljaksi” ”"

13th-century baptismal font of stone noted and illustrated in Hiekkanen (2007). Mentioned as a 13th-century font in SpottingHistory.com [https://www.spottinghistory.com/view/46/sastamala-church/] [accessed 16 August 2017]. The font consists of a roughly hemispherical basin raised on a slightly splaying circular pedestal base; appears to be totally plain except for a roll moulding at the top of the pedestal base. No cover present.
