Church Notes: original abbey church 9thC; present late-11thC abbey church; became parish church in 1792 -- listed in Mérimée [ref.: PA00105712]: " L'abbaye de Saint-Savin a été fondée au début du 9e siècle sur le site de la découverte des sépultures de deux saints martyrs chrétiens, Savin et Cyprien, morts au 5e siècle. La construction de l'actuelle église abbatiale date de la seconde moitié du 11e siècle (1040-1090). L'édifice est une construction hétérogène ; ses différentes parties (deux cryptes, transept, chevet, nef en deux parties, clocher-porche, tourelle d'escalier) reflètent les étapes successives de la construction. Endommagée pendant la guerre de Cent Ans, l'abbatiale a connu des restaurations aus 14e et 15e siècles. Au 16e siècle, l'abbatiale échappe de peu à la destruction. L'installation de la congrégation de Saint-Maur en 1640 permet à l'abbaye de connaître un renouveau : restauration du clocher, nouveau mobilier, ... Restaurations aux 19e et 20e siècles : la croisée du transept et ses peintures, ainsi que les peintures de la crypte, ont été restaurées au cours des années 1981-1995."
