Church Notes: the parish of Cales was merged with Longos Vales in the mid-16thC; the Cales church was demolished and its font ended up serving as a holy-water stoup in Longos Vales parish church
Font Notes:
A baptismal font and a holy-water stoup are mentioned in the SIPA entry [IPA.00002190] with suggested date in the 16th century in this former monastery church [www.monumentos.pt/Site/APP_PagesUser/SIPA.aspx?id=2190] [accessed 11 June 2017]: "A pia de água benta junto ao portal axial, de pé, e a pia baptismal deverão datar do séc. 16 [...] No sub-coro, com guarda-vento de madeira, tem a ladear o portal, no lado da Epístola, pia de água benta [...] A pia de água benta do sub-coro, tem taça circular, exteriormente decorada com torçal a meio e motivos tipo cabeças de cravos, sobre pé paralelepipédico." Joost Limburg [www.romanicoportugal.info/] informs [e-mail of 11 June 2017] that a local source at the parish church of Sã João Baptista in Longos Vales, where the former font now serves as holy-water stoup, gives the provenance of this object as the disappeared church of Santa Maria, in Cales; that parish was merged with Longo Vales in the mid-16th century, the church demolished and the font transfered to Longos Vales. The old basin, cylindrical with a tall underbowl, is now raised on two quadrangular blocks of stone; there are two notches at opposite sides of the upper rim, suggesting the anchorage spots for an old cover.
