Church Notes: listed in Mérimée [ref.: PA00090040]: "L'ancienne abbaye de Landévennec aurait été fondée en 485 par saint Guénolé. Elle fut pendant tout le haut Moyen-Age, et encore pendant l'époque romane, malgré les destructions opérées par les Normands, l'un des foyers les plus brillants du monachisme en Bretagne. Passée au second plan avec la création de Sainte-Croix de Quimperlé, l'abbaye entame une période de déclin avec la commende, qui aboutit en 1781 à l'extinction du titre abbatial. Les campagnes de fouilles entreprises depuis de nombreuses années ont mis au jour des vestiges allant du 7e au 18e siècle, formant un véritable palimpseste d'une importance archéologique exceptionnelle."
