The cathedral has a baptismal font made of porphyry and marble; it is said to have been made in the 19th century from a large vase brought from the Roman ruins at Pompeii; the object is vase-shaped; the basin has a flat rim moulding and a plain almost cylindrical middle section, while the underbowl is decorated with a pattern of diagonal ribs; a pair of scroll-shaped handles are set at opposite sides of the basin; the base has a short round pedestal that appears to be part of the porphyry piece, raised on a moulded lower base made of white veined marble, and a square tessarated plinth. A dome-shaped metal cover has arris and moulding decoration on it, with little angels and engraved initials at the bottom; it also bears a shield with the arms of the cathedral (?) and the finial is a statue of the Baptism of Christ scene. [NB: the baptism guide in the parish [Parrocchia Sant'Andrea Apostolo] site [www.parrocchiaamalfi.com/catechesi/battesimi/] [accessed 27 March 2017] notes the existence of the old font: "In Cattedrale infatti abbiamo l'Antico Fonte Battesimale", but does not indicate whether or not it is still used for baptisms today -- considering the height of the font one wonders how [if?] its interior is accessed at all]. [NB: we have no information on the font of the medieval church here].
