Church Notes: original abbey church early-8thC; destroyed late-9thC by Normans/Vikings; re-built 11thC; expanded 12thC; became parish church 18thC; restored ca. 1890; restored again 1948;
Font Notes:
Baptismal font consisting of an octagonal basin with four protruding human heads set at 90-degree angles of the upper rim, the rim itself with a flat moulding, a scotia and a thinner moulding below; raised on an octagonal pedestal base, a modern replacement. The entry for this church in Kerkgebouwen in Limburg [www.kerkgebouwen-in-limburg.nl/kerken/susteren/amelberga] [accessed 2 February 2017] notes "doopvont uit ca. 1200", but it is most likely a century later than that. No cover present. There is also a holy-water stoup in this church that appears to be a composite object; it consists of black stone (marble?) top housing two inner basins, raised on what appears to be a stone capital, and a black stone or marble shaft.
