There are four entries for [Great and Little] Wymondley [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/XX0000/great-and-little-wymondley/] [accessed 19 October 2016], none of which mentions cleric or church in it. The Victoria County History (Hertford, vol. 3, 1912) notes: "It is uncertain at what date Little Wymondley became a parish. There is no evidence of a church in 1086, and the living is not mentioned in the Taxatio of 1291. In 1218, however, the master of the hospital of Little Wymondley was inducted into the church, [...] and a vicarage was ordained before 1235. [...] The chancel, nave and tower are of the 15th century, probably late, but the restoration in the 19th century, when the chancel was lengthened and the aisle, vestry and porch were added, has obscured the history of the building"; there is no mention of a font here in the VCH entry. The entry for this church in English Heritage [Listing NGR: TL2169227244] (1968) informs: "Parish church. Early C12 origin for the Argentein family, given to Wymondley Priory c.1218, renovated c.1400 with chancel apse changed to square end and W tower added. Restored 1874-6 except tower, rebuilding S porch, extending N vestry and E end of chancel, and adding N aisle. The work involved replacing the chancel arch, fittings, and font, raising the nave floor level, and forming the N arcade of the nave. Restoration in 1948 revealed the rood stair and openings in S wall of nave, and ancient roof structure of nave. Tower restored 1966." [NB: we have no information on the font of the original church here -- was it the one that was replaced in the 1874-1876 restoration?]. The same EH entry describes the present font: "Caen stone octagonal font of 1875 with C17 moulded oak cover topped by symmetrical arrangement of
oak flying buttresses of serpentine shape supporting a centre with pendant and pierced obelisk finial."
