Baptismal font noted and illustrated by Ambaramarillo in 'Los Motivos de la Marea' [https://motivosdelamarea.wordpress.com/2013/01/24/pila-bautismal-de-calixtlahuacaun-caso-sui-generis/] [accessed 8 October 2016]: "la pila no es monolítica como la de Zinacantepec, sino que está conformada por dos partes sobrepuestas, la parte superior con los símbolos de la orden (el cordón franciscano), medallones y relieves con escenas religiosas, mientras que la basa es un bloque tallado con elementos prehispánicos, hace años creí que podía ser un cuauhxicalli o recipiente para contener los corazones de los sacrificados, ahora me parece que puede ser una lápida de sacrificios por la ranura que tiene". The font, as noted above, is obviously a composite of two objects; the basin appears to be a font of the Franciscan missionary tradition of the 16th century, bucket-shaped and decorated with the rope moulding symbol of the Franciscan cingulum around the upper rim, and one or more medallions with symbols of the Order around the sides; the base, however, appears to be expolia from a pagan temple, believed to have been a sacrificial stone from the nearby archaeological site. [NB: the church dates only from the late-19th century, but there must have been an earlier church or Franciscan ex-convent where the font came from].
