Font Notes:
On-site visit: There are two fonts at present in this cathedral; the font in use (?), described in the inventory entry above, is a strange-looking object located in a chapel at the west end of the north side; it looks like a world sphere painted in bright blue and decorated with golden stars and a large serpent around it held up by two cherubs resting themselves on a black marble base; 3/4 of the top is actually the font cover, with a tiny part of the blue sphere and the cherubs on the black marble stem are the actual font. The other font in this church, located in one of the ambulatory chapels, is a modern replica copy of the Tournai stone baptismal font from Termonde / Dendermonde [cf. Index entry]. Below is included a number of exchanges between Pol Herman and font expert Jean-Claude Ghislain related to the disappeared medieval font; these communications were forwarded to BSI by Pol Herman. A communication from Pol Herman (e-mail of 29 September 2022) contains an exchange between him and font expert Jean-Claude Ghislain related to the existence of the lower base of an original Romanesque font, said to be originally from the Heilig-Kerst church at Sint-Baafsdorp (which was the village from which the city of Gent emerged); It was stored in the Musée Lapidaire of the old Sint-Baafs Abbey, but it is now believed lost. This is, according to Ghislain and Herman, the fragment reported in E.J.
