Villalon de Campos No. 2 / Villalón de Campos

A second object of interest in this church [cf. Index entry for Villalon de Campos No. 1 for the other]; it consists of a roughly bucket-shaped basin decorated with a broad pattern of two horizaontal mouldings and several pipings of the shape diagonally set to divide the basin side into panels; the panels contain crude carvings; of these one is flower , the other a quadruped passant to the right; raised on a square pedestal base and a splaing lower base also square; one (?) side of the pedestal base has a floral motif carved on it. One side of the basin appears to have been either damaged or broken off intentionally; the gap is now set against a corner of the nave wall. We have no information on whether or not this may have been the font of the original Mudejar church here started in the 13th century; the crudeness of the work may mislead one into assigning too early a date to it. If it had been originaly made as a baptismal font the inner basin is too awkward and shallow to be dated to the early period of the church [13thC]; if it was a stoup, and both base and basin belonged together, it is likely of a later date. No cover present.
