human figure - female? - holding lion by the tail
Scene Description: the long-haired figure has extended arms holding the end of the tails of the two animals; his thin legs (?) are visible between the hanging back legs of the animals; the figure appears to have round bulging breasts; it is not clear whether she (?) is totally naked or not; the head gives an equivocal feeling as there is a prominence at the chin that could be construed as a beard, but certainly not a long and complex one like hte one on the other figure

human figure - male - bearded - erect phallus - holding lion by the tail
Scene Description: there is no doubt that this second human figure, long-haired and bearded, is displaying his attributes, right under the X created by the crossing lion tails he holds in his hands

Listed in Mackeprang (1941) as a baptismal font as part of the Himmerland-Mariagertypen, Mariagergruppen-A, similar to those at Kastbjerg, Skjellerup. Store Arden, Svenstrup and Vester Tørslev. Noted and illustrated as the leader of the Hov family of fonts in Slomann (1967). Baptismal font pf granite original from the old Romanesque church at Hov; the church was demolished and the font moved to the National Museum in Copenhagen. The roughly hemispherical basin is decorated with two pairs of bi-corporal lions that have non-feline heads, one decidedly ovine, the other more bovine and with a ring in its nose; the rendering of the bodies, manes and legs of the lions is very much like the one found on the other fonts of this type; there are two human figures on it, one at each back of the two pairs of lions; one of the figures is definitely male, showing a long curled moustache and beard, and his genitalia with an erect phallus right below the X formed by the crossing lion tails, the ends of which he holds in his hands; the other figure could be female, as it has round bulging breasts, but the lower body, with the exception of the lower leggs, is hidden from view; the bulging chin of this figure gives it the appearance of a beard, but this may be just a trompe l'oeil effect.
