Church Notes: Female Cistercian [now Trappist] monastery of Santa María de Carrizo, founded in 1176; modified 16th and 17thC; damaged by fire 1947;
Font Notes:
A disused stone object serves now as ornament in the courtyard of the monastery; it appears to be a composite object consisting of a roughly hemispherical basin decorated with a ribbed pattern below an upper moulding, raised on a round-to-square lower base decorated with double scrolls at the angles, and a plain short and square plinth; the basin has a metal cinch-like band all around the upper rim. No cover present. [NB: the parish church in Carrizo, Iglesia parroquial de San Andrés Apóstol, is a modern building of the 18thC -- presumably the monastery church served the parishioners until the 18thC, as was common with many churches in monasteries and abbeys when the villagers around had no parish church of their own].
