The entry for this church in Kirchen und Klöster in der Lüneburger Heide [http://cms.heidekirchen.de/pages/nordheide/uebersicht/st.-katharinen-embsen.php] [accessed 26 June 2016] notes that the original bronze font from St. Katharinen-Kirche, Embsen, disappeared ca. 1850, later to be sold to the Musée de Cluny in Paris ["Bei einem Umbau 1850 ist leider das wertvolle alte Inventar der Kirche verschwunden, nur ein bronzenes Taufbecken aus der Zeit um 1310 blieb erhalten. Es befindet sich im Musée de Cluny in Paris, wohin es verkauft wurde!"]. This could be one of a number of French metal fonts that are mentioned in Germain Bapst's Les métaux dans l'antiquité et au moyen age : l'étain (Paris, 1884: 137): "Les fonts baptismaux furent quelquefois en plomb. Le musée de Cluny en conserve du treizième siècle où existent de petits décors peu intéressants : la forme n'est pas gracieuse. Nous avons trouvé trace de cuves analogues dans deux églises du Midi, à Bouret [i.e., Bourret] et à Verdun-sur-Garonne, et puis successivement à Beaumont-de-Lomagne, à Lombez, à Aulin, toujours dans la même région." The font consists of a bucket-shaped basin decorated with a pair of vines [acanthus? grape?], two pairs of parallel mouldings and a number of tiny motifs, symbols and scenes in between; these include an Adoration of the Magi with a crowned Madonna and a haloed Child, all five figures inside a palatial building; two different renditions of the Crucifixion, a 6-point star inside a hexafoil, a shield with a rampant lion, a possible Majestas Domini, an angel inside a circle, etc.; the basin is raised on four standing male figures set at 90-degree angles of the circular lower base; the lower base has a series of tiny motifs [unidentified]. No cover present, nor is there any evidence of anchoring spots for it. There are two handles at 180-degrees on the side of the basin.
