Church Notes: original church belonged to the Knights Hospitaller [Order of Saint John of Jerusalem] and was dedicated to St. Michael -- listed in SIPA [ref.: IPA.00002964]
Font here listed in SIPA [ref.: IPA.00002964]: "Pia baptismal semelhante à existente na Igreja da Misericórdia de Alfaiates (v. PT020911070010)".
Baptismal font consisting of a roughly hemispherical basin mounted on an unrelated square block; the basin is made of coarse granite and bears decoration similar to the nearby fonts at Alfaiataes and Vilar Maior [cf. Index entries] consisting of nested ribs framing arches around the upper side, a band of rope moulding below, and large concentric circles on the lower side and underbowl; the lower end of the underbowl is round and would have been matched with a round foot or base; the back of the basin appears to be unfinished, just rough, without the corresponding decoration, and the font is against a corner of the nave, perhaps as it always was. No cover present but some of the damage to the upper rim may be ralated to hardware from an earlier cover. This church has an odd object in it, also of stone, the use of which is not mentioned in the sources; it could be a mortar, although it is rather tall for that.
