Bacouel-sur-Selle

Described and illustrated in Richesses en Somme [www.richesses-en-somme.com/patrimoine-des-églises/fonts-baptismaux/fonts-bapt-du-10e-au-13e-siècle/] [accessed 15 May 2016]: "Cette petite église du XIe s. nichée au bord de la Selle, est restée magnifiquement préservée malgré les outrages du temps. Elle conserve des fonts baptismaux en pierre du XIe s. dont la cuve ronde, d'une grande sobriété, repose sur un pied mouluré." Baptismal font consisting of a basin with a roughly cylindrical upper half, the lower half rounded like a very broad roll moulding; on a moulded pedestal base; noth parts suggest a much later date than suggested in the caption above. At opposite ends of the upper rim is evidence of repaired damage likely caused by metal staples splitting the stone. Present cover appears to be round, flat and plain; date unknown. [NB: the dating to the 11thC is questionable; the shape of the basin, regardless of whether the base is original or not, suggests a much later date]
