There is an entry for this Merton [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/TQ2669/merton/] [accessed 9 March 2016]; it reports a church in it. The Victoria County History (Surrey, vol. 4, 1912) notes: "A church is mentioned in the Domesday Survey and was evidently included in the grant of the manor to the canons by Henry I. [...] The earliest part of the [present] building is the west end of the nave, which dates from the 12th century"; there is no mention of a font in the VCH entry. The present font is Victorian.
