Described and illustrated in Tuaillon (1989) and (2001), with date in the late-10th or early-11th century; Tuaillon identifies scenes of Adam in Eden, and deer hunting in it. Listed and illustrated in Monuments historiques (1993), Palissy [ref.: PM69000202], as the basin of a baptismal font of the 10th century [="Cuve baptismale [...] 10e siècle [...] Noted and illustrated by "P.T." in an undated article in PDF format [http://saintalexandre.paroisse.net/nos-villages/grezieu-la-varenne/le-benitier-roman-de-grezieu-la-varenne.pdf] [accessed 27 February 2016]. The object consists of a roughly hemispherical basin raised on a marble pedestal base; the modern (19thC) pedestal base has been engraved "IXe siècle", probably in reference to the old basin; the basin is relatively small, withn outer diameter less than 50 cm, a size one would associate with a medieval stoup rather than a font; the sides of the basin are profusely decorated, with not a single space blank on them; at the top, near the upper rim, is a rope moulding; below it is a hunting scene showing a human on horseback with a pack of canids pursuing an adult deer or stag and its cub; one of the canids faces left and appears uninterested in the action facing right; the four arches to the right of the hunting scene are all different; on the left is a very ornate arch-head supoported on a torsade column; inside are two large floral motifs; in the next arch to the right are thee motifs: a round multi-helix atop, a star-like flower in a circle in the middle, and a mouth-shaped object with a bow atop at the bottom; the third arch from the left has a plant (?) in the upper half, a quadruped and a fish in the lower half; the fourth arch has a plant or tree in it, its trunk accordion-shaped; next right stands a male figure full frontal, the arms to the sides appear to be palms in; he appears to be bare-chested but wearing shorts to above the knee; he is framed by a number of items; floral or foliage motifs extend from the spandrel of the arch by his right shoulder, and there is an upside-down quadruped by his right arm; there is another quadruped by his right leg; a large star-shaped floral motif is by his left shoulder, a bow-shaped flower or butterfly by his left hand; by the side of is left leg are two large fish, one upside down; three arches follow after the standing man; the first contains a plam tree, while the second and third have a variety of floral and foliage motifs in them, all arches with motifs in the spandrels; next to the right are six large square floral mtifs arranged three up, three down; the underbowl has a gemoetrical pattern that is a diaper-like interlace, with saw-tooth pattern in the lozenge-shaped pattern; the underbowl extends a few inches below a roll moulding and is plain, all part of the same block of stone. The small proportions of the object [cf. supra] do not support the claim that it was originally a font, now used as holy-water stoup. This is further suggested by the lack of any evidence of a cover on the upper rim [NB: we have not been able to find out whether there is a drain hole in the ineer basin well]. The carved surfaces indicate that it was always meant to stand detached from any walls and raised on some sort of support. Noted and illustrated in Pierre Tuaillon's La cuve de Grézieu-la-Varenne, bénitier ou cuve baptismale?, in Actes des Journées d'études 2001, XVIII - Vaugneray et sa région, Union des Sociétés Historiques du Rhône, Lyon, Conseil Général du Rhône, 2001, page 37. Noted and illustrated in Ratmond Oursel's Lyonnais, Dombes, Bugey et Savoie Romans (Zodiaque, 1990) [cf. infra]. Noted and illustrated in Lieux Sacrés (7 June 2014) [http://lieuxsacres.canalblog.com/archives/2014/06/07/30031216.html] [accessed 18 July 2023]: "une cuve baptismale devenue bénitier, datant du XIe siècle. D’une hauteur de 36 cm et d’un diamètre de 47, elle est posée sur une colonne en marbre blanc du XIXe. La tradition dit que Guillaume le Pieux lui-même en fit don à la paroisse". The object consists of a stone basin of roughly hemispherical shape, mounted on a replacement columnar base and a square plinth; the square plinth is inscribed "CUVE BAPTISMALE ROMANE Xe SIECLE"
