Noted and illustrated in Ludorf (1914). Listed in Ligtenberg (1915). In Drake (2002) as a Bentheim font of the Group A2, the 'modified cylinder', a group in which this author includes the fonts at Bersenbrück, Büttel, Emsbüren, Enschede, Epe, Ermelo, Gimpte, Herzlake, Holtland, Ochtrup, Ostönnen, Otterloo, Ueffeln. The basin is roughly cylindrical, with a broad double-rope moulding or braid followed down by an arcade of blind round arches on short plain columns, and a single rope moulding below; the upper rim of the basin has several holes drilled in it, probably for anchorings of an old font cover; on a circular pedestal base with mouldings at top and bottom. No cover present. An article by Peter Beckmann in the 18 July 2014 issue of the Westfälische Nachrichten [www.wn.de/Muensterland/Kreis-Steinfurt/Greven/1657563-Taufkapelle-in-Gimbte-neu-gestaltet-Man-haelt-foermlich-die-Luft-an] [accessed 9 February 2016] informs on the recent restoration of the font and its installation in the renovated baptismal chapel of this church. The font apparently had a cover prior to this restoration [cf. Images area]. On-site notes: the inner basin has a non-removable glass and metal insert now; the exterior appears to have been drastically re-tooled. The baptismal font in Gimbte is partially illustrated in a Wikipedia digital photograph taken 3 October 2014 by Frank Vincentz [https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Greven_Gimbte_-_Alter_Fährweg_-_St._Johannes_Baptist_in_23_ies.jpg] [accessed 3 October 2025]
