A report delivered to the 13th general meeting of the 'Provinciaal genootschap van kunsten en Wetenschappen in Noordbrabant' by the then librarian and secretary of the society, Dr. C.R. Hermans, on 6 July 1849, reports the 'in loco discovery' of a 12th- or 13th century baptismal font in the church at Herpen, and refers to another such 'discovery' a few years earlier at the ancient parish church at Auland [source: Handelingen van het Provinciaal genootschap van kunsten en Wetenschappen in Noordbrabant (vol. 5: 35)]
