A large plain tub-shaped basin stands in the little garden outside the church, on the south side; it has all the appearances of being a baptismal font of a period consistent with that of the early church here, the late-13th century; its upper rim is much damaged, the worst damage being at opposite ends, which suggests breakage where the main anchoring spots for an early font would have been. The font now in place in the baptistery is of a later date and may have been originally from San Miguel de Montes Claros, a rural chapel of ease said to have existed nearby still in the 16th century; it is crude local work consisting of a roughly hemispherical basin of very thick walls, the outside decorated with two sets of patterns; below the rim there are little arch-heads with inserts in them, whereas all around the basin sides and underbowl the pattern is of concave ribs with short inserts at the bottom; both patterns are found on fonts of the Gothic period, in Spain and elsewhere, but the workmanship here is very crude, not necessarily indicative of ancient date. It has a crude font cover, wooden, round and plain.
