Eyck (1846) mentions early fonts at Oldenzaal, Heemse, Loosduinen and Schokland, that are now lost. EH ter Kuile (1971) [www.dbnl.org/tekst/kuil005prov01_01/kuil005prov01_01_0017.php] [accessed 31 December 2015] notes that the present font in this church was executed by architect Freytagh from Bentheim in 1814 using Bentheim sandstone; the cover is made of gilded wood, and has a large statue of John the Baptist as finial. [NB: the stone font at Sint-Antoniuskerk, also in Oldenzaal is early-20thC]
Pol Herman in a communication with BSI (e-mail of 1 February 2022) mentions Eyck's source [cf. supra] and writes: "Maybe the clearly Romanesque friezes of confronting lions (one fragment in the museum Oudheidkamer and two in the wall) have something to do with it?. They remind me of the fragment of the Romanesque baptismal font of Horssen, of the font of Wanssum, and others."
