Font Notes:
Moulins (1842) tells of his own childhood memories of this font having a broken base and being kept in one of the chapels or alcoves on the chancel side of the Bovenkerk [i.e., Sint-Nicolaaskerk]; he later got involved in the restoration of the font which he describes as being made of "blaauwen arduin-steen", 24 inches in height; an illustration of the font is provided, a hexagonal basin with deeply carved panels decorated with pairs of trefoiled arch-heads between mouldings; on a pedestal base of constructional shafts, and a lower base also hexagonal and decorated with graded mouldings. As Moulin (ibid.) explains, the baptismal waters are conveniently held in a metal insert that has its own cover, so that the water can easily be warmed up in preparation for a baptism. Eyck (1846) cites Moulin [cf. supra] and suggests a 16th-century dating for the font. The Bovenkerk web site [www.debovenkerk.nl/rondleiding/preekstoel-doopvont.html] [accessed 29 December 2015] notes the late-Gothic pulpit and hexagonal stone baptismal font, both 15th-century.
