Olst / Holsto

Drake (2002) notes: "Bases of Berge fonts, type unknown, are at Groenlo and Olst"; the reference is to one of the subgroups Drake uses for the classification of Bentheim fonts [NB: "Berge" is subdivided into Type I, Type II, Variant and Type III]. This font is not mentioned in Ligtenberg (1915) but in his illustration (ibid., figs. 16 and 17) of the two types of 'fan frieze' found at the lower rim of these fonts, one of them (ibid., fig 17) extends below a continuous cross line; the fan frieze on the Olst fragment is clearly seen to wrap around at the bottom, even though the surface and the carving are in an abismal state of conservation. The lower part of the fragment shows shapes at 90-degree angles, but they are two damaged to suggest animal or human form. The PKN (Protestantse Kerk in Nederland) entry for this church [www.pkn-olst.nl/default.aspx?lIntEntityId=30258] [accessed 24 December 2015] illustrates the modern replacement font, and adds some notes about the old one: " In de kerk zelf is een (relatief nieuw) doopvont aanwezig, maar er is ook nog een ouder doopvont aanwezig, dat u in de toreningang aantreft. In de kerkruimte was voor dit oude Romaanse doopvont geen plaats. Het is sterk verweerd en gehavend. Op een vierkante voetplaat hebben vier figuren (leeuwen of mensen) rondom de schacht gestaan. Boven de ronde schijf, die die figuren draagt, begint de ronde kuip. Deze was versierd met golvende wijnranken die van elkaar werden gescheiden door touwbandmotieven. Het is gemaakt van zandsteen. Deze doopvonten werden na 1250 in serie gemaakt in Bentheim, net over de grens in Duitsland. In een oud kunstreisboek staat dat het doopvont in 1949 omgekeerd aan de noordzijde van de kerk lag. Op dat omgekeerde doopvont ging vroeger de koster staan om zijn kerkelijke - en vaak ook niet-kerkelijke berichten als verkopingen - bekend te maken. Daarom werd zo’n steen ook “roepsteen” genoemd. In 1964 werd gemeld dat de steen weer rechtop stond. Maar om verder verval tegen te gaan, staat de steen nu in de toreningang." The above note mentions that at one point it was used by the sacristan as a stand. The modern font is located at the east end of the nave, by the chancel.
