Scene Description: The church blown up by the German army 29 January 1945 -- Source caption: "Oorlogsschade. Op 29 januari 1945 bliezen de Duitsers de kerk op, waarbij de toren, dak en gewelven werden vernield. Van de inventaris zijn het orgel en de banken zo goed als geheel vernield. De romaanse doopvont uit de 12e eeuw en de klokken bleven gespaard. Alle gewijde vaten en kerkschatten verdwenen door roof. Voor de voorzichtigheid werden na de bevrijding kerklinnen en paramenten, Linne was nog steeds een plaats zonder bewoners, aan Engelse soldaten meegegeven en op die manier gered. Baptismal font of the 12th-13th century noted and illustrated in Ligtenberg (1915). Noted in Voorloopige lijst der Nederlandsche Monumenten van Geschiedenis en Kunst, deel VIII: De Provincie Limburg, opgemaakt en uitgegeven door Afdeeling A der Rijkscommissie voor de Monumentenzorg. Uitgegeven in twee doorgepagineerd delen. 's Gravenhage (Algemeene Landsdrukkerij), 1926. [642 blz. ISBN -]. Hierin "R.K. kerk (H. Martinus)": blz. 194 ("Romaansche hardstenen doopvont (XII)" - dit is de relevante tekst volledig). Listed in the Rijkscommissie voor de Monumentenbeschrijving, Kunstreisboek voor Nederland. Samengesteld in 1965. Amsterdam (Van Kampen), 1969 [713 blz. ISBN -]. Hierin "R.-K. kerk": blz. 629 ("een merkwaardige romaanse doopvont waarvan de vier hoekkolommetjes op dierfiguren rusten en de kuip versierd is met een rankfries en hoekkoppen" - dit is de relevante tekst volledig). Baptismal font of Mosan-type design made of local limestone; round basin with four protruding human heads arranged at 90-degree angles (at least three of them are male and bearded); the sides between the heads are decorated with branches of acanthus bearing fruit; supported on a broad central shaft and four angle colonnettes, all with moulded capitals and bases; the lower base has the usual mouldings and is of the square shape in this type, but has four [mythical?] animals wrapping around the bases of the colonnettes. Metal [copper] cover of the late 19th century [1886), consisting of a conical base with a round tower atop; on the top of the tower a round pointed steeple with a floral finial; this finial links via a chain to a wall-mounted side crane that swings the cover aside to provide access to the basin interior; there is a large ornate clasp to lock the cover to the basin side.
