Noted in the Rijksmonumenten.nl site [www.rijksmonumenten.nl/monument/36816/johannes-de-doperkerk/schin-op-geul/] accessed 22 December 2015] as a baptismal font consisting of a [lime]stone basin on a sandstone base [="Hardstenen doopvont op zandstenen onderstuk"]. The awkward looking font is obviously a composite object; the small cylindrical basin is totally plain, and could be quite early, perhaps the font of the original 12th-century church here; it is now raised on a sandstone [cf. supra] pedestal base of three volumes in a single block of stone: the top is octagonal with irregular panels on the sides; the next volume down has very large crudely carved cherub heads all around; the bottom volume is square and plain, with chamfered angles. The metal font cover is dome shaped, of two volumes, with a Latin cross finial; perhaps 19th-century. We have no information on how this object came to be put together. Joost Limburg [www.romanicoportugal.info/zdutchfonts.htm] suggested the similarity of this old basin with the one at Eys, also in Limburg.
