Noted and illustrated in Richard Haupt's Die Bau und Kunstdenkmäler der Provinz Schleswig-Holstein (1887, Bd. I: 428 and fig. 652), as a baptismal font of "roter rheinischer Sandstein", similar to the font at Keitum [which it is really not -- cf. Index entry]; it notes that its cover similar to the one at Bröns [="Deckel wie der zu Bröns"]. Noted and illustrated in Sauermann (1904) as a Bentheim font. Noted and illustrated in Ligtenberg (2015) after Sauermann. Described and illustrated in Danmarks kirker [http://danmarkskirker.natmus.dk/uploads/tx_tcchurchsearch/Sjyll_1133-1152.pdf] [accessed 1 March 2022]: "senromansk, af Wesersandsten, nordtysk arbejde, antagelig fra Bentheim-værkstedet30. Den store font, 90,5 cm i tvm., der er hugget i een sten, har som flere af værkstedets sene arbejder en kumme hvilende på fire ben af menneskeskikkelse, udhugget i den firkantede plint. Kummen indvendig beklædt med bly. Siden 1888 anbragt midt i skibets østende (kronik)." Drake (2002) classes the baptismal font at Witting as a Bentheimer, Group A/B Transitional made up of the fonts Brandflecht, Hviding, Lengerich and Witting. Font consists of a roughly cylindrical basin de corated with a double rope moulding, the thread going in the same direction in both; crude arcade of round irregular arches, some appearing horseshoe-shaped; roll moulding atop the round-to-square base; four human figures, seated, hands on their knees; set at 90-degree angles around the base. No font cover present but evidence of damage to the upper rim suggests these were anchoring spots for an earlier cover. [NB: the authors cited above give the location of Witting in Schleswig-Holstein; Haupt gives "Hvviding" as alternate spelling; it is Hviding, now Denmark].
