view of base

Scene Description: not known when this became the base for the medieval basin -- was the composite object ever used as a font, or was it put together in the castle as someone's contribution to a Kunstkabinett? [cf. FontNotes]

Font Notes:
Illustrated in E.H. ter Kuile (1958) with the caption "Huis Keppel Doopvont". The object appears to be a composite font that uses a re-cycled fragment of an inscribed column; on it is a basin from a medieval font, the sides decorated with very large and shallow pointed arch-heads, the underbowl flat and plain, with a short plain stem that appears to be part of the same block as the upper volume; there is a much-damaged moulding below the upper rim, the rim itself also missing chunks of stone, some of which may be related to anchoring areas for an old font cover. We have no further information on how or when the composite object was put together, nor do we know whether it was originally related to the castle at all, or was brought in perhaps from an abandoned church in the area. A 2013 YouTube video [www.youtube.com/watch?v=t9FxWukaGfM] [accessed 13 April 2016] shows the old font the font is still there, inside the mansion, wrong-footed and all, serving as a vase, to the right of the doorway.
