Baptismal font of Namur limestone consisting of an octagonal basin decorated with four human heads at 90-degree angles, a double moulding with a scotia in between all around the sides; plain rounded underbowl; raised on a modern octagonal-to-square pedestal base. There is no font cover present; instead, there is tetrapod metal [copper?] ornament with a Sisyphus-like figure as finial.
A communication from Pol Herman to BSI (e-mail of 16 February 2022) notes: At Houten, there is the late gothic basin of a Mosan font. But the Voorloopige lijst der Nederlandsche monumenten van geschiedenis en kunst. Deel I. De provincie UtrechtW. Leijdenroth, Utrecht 1908 also says that the pulpit stands on the base of a baptismal font of the 15th century. And the Monumenten in Nederland. Utrecht. Ronald Stenvert, Chris Kolman, Ben Olde Meierink, Margreet Tholens, Ben Kooij en Ronald Rommes, Rijksdienst voor de Monumentenzorg, Zeist / Waanders Uitgevers, Zwolle 1996 goes a step further by saying that the basin and foot belong together. I don’t know yet if I can believe it. Stylistically it does not really fit.
Both texts date the basin at +/-1300, which is certainly not correct. It is probably 2 centuries younger [i.e., +/-1500]
