INFORMATION

FontID: 20211HOR
Church/Chapel: Rooms-Katholieke Sint-Bonifatiuskerk [redundant]
Church Patron Saints: St. Boniface [aka Bonifatius, Winfrith]
Church Location: Kerkpad 2, 6631AB Horssen, Netherlands
Country Name: Netherlands
Location: Gelderland
Directions to Site: Located in the municipality of Druten, 10 km NW of Wijchen
Font Location in Church: Inside the new church, NW corner
Century and Period: 13th century [basin only] [composite font], Medieval [composite]
Workshop/Group/Artisan: Mosan font
Church Notes: Archimon [www.archimon.nl/gelderland/horssenbonifatius.html] [accessed 9 December 2015] notes: "Of the three churches in Horssen, the St. Bonifatius is the oldest. Little is known about its architectural history. A previous church was mentioned in the 13th century, most likely a Romanesque one-aisled building with a narrower, straight choir." Disused 1908-1937; served as community centre until 1974; back to spiritual uses thereafter.
Listed with measurements in Ligtenberg (1915). Schulte (1986) writes: "Doopvont. Totale hoogte 103 cm, diameter kuip 106 cm; Naamse steen; xiii. Voet en stam met vier zuiltjes nieuw, 1910. Vierkant basement, waarop geschulpt geprofileerd voetstuk; ronde stam met vier ronde zuiltjes; ronde kuip met vier uitstekende maskers; tussen de maskers drie keer een bladmotief en eenmaal een kop tussen ranken; rond bolvormig deksel met bol en kruisje. De rand van de bak is met cement gerepareerd." This font may be the one entered in Drake (2002) as "Horsen", among a group of Mosan fonts with round bowls on multisupport bases. Other than some cement repair finishes around the top rim, the basin of this font is original; the rest of the font, a central shaft, four outer colonnettes and a square lower base are modern though much in the expected style corresponding to the basin. As indicated in Schulte above, there are four well-rendered heads at 90-degree angles, although the usual leaf beneath the head has become practically a shelf here; between the heads three of the sides have a four-petaled rosette in very elaborate tracery made up of four acanthus (?) leaves that form a quatrefoiled frame of sorts; the fourth side is a stylised lion head with vegetation stemming from the mouth, two acanthus (?) leaves similar to those framing the rosette on the other sides. There is no font cover present but the inner well of the basin has a metal insert, presumably modern
