Century and Period: 14th century [composite font?], Medieval [composite]
Church Notes: original church here 14thC; re-built 1953-1955 after the destruction of the old church in 1944
Ligtenberg (1915) suggests that this font may be a composite, as the placement for the columns on the underbowl and lower base do not match. Baptismal font of Namur limestone consisting of an octagonal basin with four human heads at 90-degree angles on the basin sides, otherwise the aides are plain and curving on the underbowl; the base consists of five clustered shafts, a broad central one and four slender colonnettes at 90-degree angles in line with the heads on the basin; the columns have no capitals but stand on moulded bases; the square lower base has a spur at each angle. Font cover of metal [brass?] with orb-and-cross finial that is attached to chains that connect it to a swing-arm crane located behind the font. We have no information on whether or not the font suffered damage in 1944, when the church itself was heavily damaged. When the church was reconstructed in 1953-1954 a baptistery chapel was created to the right of the west entranceway and the font was located inside it.
