Church Notes: original church 12thC; extended 13thC; 15thC tower -- The church is now owned by the Stichting Alde Fryske Tsjerken who restored it in 1973. Today it serves as a workshop and museum. The baptismal font from 1540 is preserved in the Fries Museum.

Font noted in the 1881 Catalogus of the Friesch Genootschap van GeschiedOudheid en Taalkunde te Leeuwarden; it mentions a Crucifixion scene on it, with two women present; also foliage decoration and remnants of paint on it; date suggested 14th-15th century; it acknowledges the donor of the font to te museum at Leeuwarden [="Steenen doopvont uit de kerk te Genum, (zeer beschadigd), staande op steenen voetstuk, komvormig, doch van buiten tienkantig, waarop, voor zooverre zichtbaar, de voorwerpen der kruiziging zich bevinden tusschen twee vrouwenbeelden; verder lofwerk en enkele zichtbare letters en sporen van polychromie. (14e 15e eeuw). De kolommen van het voetstuk schijnen kandelaren te vertoonen: in een daarvan is een wapentje zichtbaar, bevattende eene zoogenaamde rune. Hoogte van de geheele vont 1.00 M. Hoogte van de kom 0.42 M. Diepte van de kom 0.27 M. Middellijn van de kom van buiten 0.56 M. Middellijn van de kom van binnen 0.48 M. Geschenk van den heer Mr. A. Looxma Ypeij te Rijperkerk"]. Baptismal font from the parish church of Genum, now preserved in the Fries Museum in Leewarden [NB: the church itself has been disused for many years and has non-cult uses now]. The font consists of a roughly hemispherical basin decorated with a scene that shows two persons kneeling (?) on the front side [cf. supra], the rest filled with a busy array of floral and foliage motifs; a much damaged border below the upper rim has an inscription that includes the date of the font, 1540; raised on a square (?) pedestal stem decorated with floral and foliate motifs similar to those on the basin. The Museum entry for this font [https://collectie.friesmuseum.nl/?diw-id=tresoar_friesmuseum_QB00426] [accessed 13 June 2024] gives its measurements as: "23.0 cm, 25.0 cm, 25.5 cm, 26.0 cm, 36.0 cm, 40.0 cm, 40.5 cm, 42.5 cm, 45.0 cm, 58.5 cm, 62.5 cm, 102.0 cm, 115.0 cm, 180.0 cm".
A communication to BSI from Pol Herman (e-mail of 20 November 2022) refers to a 1613 book by Ernestus Harinxma a Donia [https://www.mpaginae.nl/EHVD/kerkkalender.htm] [accessed 5 October 2023] a text in which refers to the font here: "text is relevant to the font at Ginnum: 'In 1629 zag hij met zijn vrouw in de kerk van Genum (Ferwerderadeel) een stenen doopvont, dat door Feyo Roorda en Rixt Hannia 1535 geschonken was'" [=In 1629 he and his wife saw a stone baptismal font in the church of Genum (Ferwerderadeel), which had been donated in 1535 by Feyo Roorda and Rixt Hannia]. Additionally Pol Herman refers to the entry for this font in the Beeldbank Cultureelerfgoed of the Netherlands [https://beeldbank.cultureelerfgoed.nl/rce-mediabank/detail/92b0059d-a162-756d-18b9-354e92d28183] [accessed 5 October 2023] in which the painting and inscription on the font is mentioned: "Gedeeltelijk is nog de beschildering met groen en rood zichtbaar, en om de rand is een geschrift van germaanse minuskel letters" [=Partly the painting with green and red is still visible, and around the edge is a writing in Germanic minuscule letters]."
